Objectives

  • Support the music activities run by the Community Music Leaders (CMLs), trained by Musicians without Borders (MwB), for the benefit of children and youth with scarce economic resources;
  • Accompany the music-therapy program towards sustainability.

Beneficiaries

Between January and December 2017, the project Rwanda Umuziki Hub involved with Alta Mane support:

  • 20-30 aspiring CMLs, 3 Rwandan trainers and 60 CMLs;
  • 15 young people from WE-ACTx for Hope, who graduated to become CML;
  • 27 CLMs, who carried out an outreach program, intended to 628 children;
  • 16 CMLs employed as assistant trainers and hired in 7 Community Based Organizations;
  • 1000 young people living with HIV in Kigali, recipients of music therapy activities;
  • 3000 children and disadvantaged young people living in Kigali, who benefited from MwB music activities;
  • 507 children and youth, who participated to Music Support Programs at the WE-ACTx for Hope Clinic;
  • 400 hospitalized children, who benefited of music sessions at the Alive Medical Services Clinic in Uganda;
  • 1 Project Manager.

Activities

Between January and December 2017 with Alta Mane support, MwB trained 20-30 prospective CMLs to offer music-therapy at CHuK hospital and other NGOs in Kigali. Other 15 young people graduated to become CML to be able to organise music workshops for disadvantaged children and youth in Kigali. MwB also offered an advanced course for 3 Rwandan trainers and 23 CML in Kigali, an on-going training for 37 CML in Kigali, and promoted monthly outreach events organized by 27 CMLs, involving 7 Community Based Organizations and 628 children. Music therapy activities continued at the WE-ACTx for Hope clinic in favour 1000 young people living with HIV and 507 children and youth. MwB kept on supporting music activities for 3000 disadvantaged children and young people in the capital and the Rwanda Eastern Province. Finally, MwB in collaboration with Keep A Child Alive, continued the training courses in music therapy in Uganda at the Alive Medical Services Clinic, hence allowing 400 hospitalized children to take part to music sessions. In 2018, MwB will keep on organizing trainings and follow-up of CMLs in Rwanda.

Musicians without Borders

Founded in 1999, MwB works worldwide using music as a tool to improve living conditions and reconcile populations torn apart by war. MwB collaborates with musicians belonging to civil society organization to respond to local needs. Successful cases are used to standardize and promote models, methodologies and training courses adapted to the needs of other regions. MwB introduced for the first time in Rwanda the music therapy program in 2010 and in 2012 the Community Music Leaders training program.

Information

Fondation Alta Mane supports Musicians without Borders activities in Rwanda since 2013. From 2015 to 2016, Alta Mane support focused on the “Community Music Leadership Training” sessions in Mahama refugee camp (further information). In 2016, Alta Mane supported the music therapy program at WE-ACTx for Hope clinic in Kigali (further information). Fondation Alta Mane has supported the Rwanda Umuziki Hub project since 2016 (further information).
